The idea
This is an ongoing 2D game project inspired by the warm, systems-driven worlds of games such as Graveyard Keeper and Stardew Valley. The central idea is to explore that style of game through a different role: the player is a librarian responsible for restoring, developing and gradually expanding a medieval library.
I have always liked games where a relatively ordinary occupation becomes the foundation for a much larger world. Farming, crafting or maintaining a graveyard gives the player something familiar to return to while characters, exploration and a wider story gradually develop around it.
The library is my version of that idea. Books, knowledge, restoration and the growth of the collection provide the centre around which the rest of the game can develop.
Life around the library
The library is intended to be more than a setting. It is the player's workplace, progression space and connection to the wider world.
The current concept revolves around improving the library, expanding its collection, finding rarer books and attracting new visitors as the space becomes more established. Those activities would gradually change what the player can access and what kinds of people, stories and discoveries begin to appear.
Alongside that everyday routine, I want the game to develop a larger narrative. Books, records and discoveries can become a natural way of revealing characters, places and mysteries beyond the library, allowing ordinary work to gradually lead into something much larger.
Building the game
The project is being developed in Godot and is also the framework through which I am learning game development more seriously.
Rather than trying to build the entire game at once, I am working through smaller parts of the experience: movement, interaction, tile-based environments, room proportions, character scale and the first pieces of a functional library space.
These prototypes help determine not only how the game should work technically, but which ideas actually feel worthwhile once they have to function in practice.
Where it stands
The project is still in early development. The central idea of a medieval library-focused game is established, but much of the surrounding design is intentionally still open.
Mechanics, narrative details and the visual language will continue to change as the project develops and as I become more capable with Godot, programming and pixel art.
For now, the goal is to keep turning the core idea into increasingly tangible pieces of a game rather than trying to define every system before it has been tested.
